Russia hits out over Syria demand
Russia accuses the UN of forcing Syria into a civil war with the new draft resolution that will demand President Bashar Al Assad to step down.
A senior Russian diplomat has said that the UN’s draft resolution to deal with the violence in Syria, which includes a demand that Syrian President Bashar Al Assad step aside, is a “path to civil war”.
He accused the UN of not making a reasonable attempt to find an alternative to Assad’s removal.
“The Western draft Security Council resolution on Syria does not lead to a search for compromise,” Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov wrote on Twitter. “Pushing this resolution is a path to civil war.”
Russia has been one of Assad’s strongest backers as he tries to crush an uprising that began nearly 11 months ago. Russia also fears that the new measure could open the door to military intervention, the way an Arab-backed UN resolution provided the mandate for NATO airstrikes in Libya.
Russia was expected to veto any punitive action at a meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the draft.
While the world powers ponder what to do next, the violence continued in Syria. Troops crushed pockets of resistance by rebel soldiers on Monday and retook control of the eastern suburbs of Damascus after rebel soldiers had briefly captured them.
“Intense shooting was heard in Zamalka and Arbeen,” an observer said.
The UN estimates that more than 5,400 people have been killed in the Syrian government crackdown.
