Turkey’s Gul to begin Jordan visit on Tuesday

| 27/11/2009

gulPresident of Turkey Abdullah Gul and his spouse will begin on Tuesday a three-day official visit to Jordan upon an invitation by Their Majesties King Abdullah and Queen Rania.

The King and Gul will hold talks on ways to boost bilateral cooperation, as well as the latest developments in the region, particularly efforts to bring about peace and stability, and issues of mutual concern, a Royal Court statement said.

Several cooperation agreements between Jordan and Turkey are scheduled to be signed during the visit.

Gul was invited to visit Jordan in a letter from King Abdullah delivered by Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh in August.

During a visit to Turkey earlier this month, Prime Minister Nader Dahabi met with Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional issues.

At the time, Jordan and Turkey agreed to sign a stalled free trade agreement before the end of the year and to cancel visa fees, among other deals meant to boost bilateral ties.

The two countries also agreed to set up a joint strategic council to meet twice a year, in Turkey and Jordan alternately, and to be co-chaired by the two prime ministers.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu also visited Amman in September, where he met with King Abdullah and Dahabi to discuss bilateral ties and issues of mutual concern.
