Lycian Way in Turkey

| 12/09/2009

Friends of missing Fylde coast grandfather John Kirkham have backed his wife’s suspicions he has been abducted. The experienced walker was a keen member of Wyre Ramblers and members say they find it “very difficult” to believe he is lost. Ramblers treasurer John Adams said: “He is a competent walker. He is a capable map-reader, he knows how to use a compass and I find it very difficult to believe he is lost.

“I have spoken to his wife Sandra in Turkey and I think the suspicion now is that somebody has taken him against his will. “I would rather he was taken by someone the alternative is unthinkable, that he is injured or has died.” Mr Kirkham, 67, of Ennerdale Avenue in Fleetwood, vanished on August 10 while walking the famous Lycian Way in Turkey.

He had set off at around 10am from the Dolphin Apartments in the Olu Deniz resort, equipped with a compass, water and food, and promised to be back by 6pm. When he did not return his wife contacted the jandarma – Turkish police. His Wyre Rambler friends insist the walk was well within his capabilities and that he took part in at least 26 walks with them every year.

Mr Adams said: “I would be happy with a five-mile walk in those temperatures and John would have had sufficient fluids and food and he is experienced. “He knows what he is about and he has been walking in those temperatures before. He is a fit man.”

An extensive search by the Turkish authorities has produced no sign of the former Tornado project manager at BAE Systems. Now they are concentrating on the village of Cozagic where he was last seen and are interviewing villagers. His daughter, Sharon Wilkinson, flew home yesterday to care for her children
