Britons who travel abroad

| 12/09/2009

Britons who travel abroad are often labelled as badly behaved and the reputation of travelling Brits was dealt another blow this week when a teenager from Cumbria exposed himself on a drunken night out. Thomas Strong, 19, not only decided to pull his shorts down in the popular holiday resort of Marmaris but he went on to start swearing at a statue of the nation’s founder.

Turkey holds Ataturk in very high regard and he is worshipped as a national hero and if the police had not arrested Strong when they had, it is likely that he would have beaten by locals for his behaviour. After his punishment from a judge in court, local people did not feel that it was severe enough and have since created a Facebook group called “String up Strong” and many are calling for the teenager to be hanged.

“We know, as British tourists, that we are expected to binge drink and behave badly and there is a strong element of peer pressure in groups of young people who travel abroad together, so they find themselves conforming to the cultural expectations of their own country, rather than the country they are holidaying in,” commented Dr Arthur Cassidy, a social psychologist at the Belfast Institute.

A lack of inhibition often caused by drinking alcohol and the high temperatures in foreign countries has also been cited as a reason for the violent, sexually risky and often rude behavior of Brits on holiday.
