A British couple have been thrown into jail in Altinkum Turkey

| 26/04/2009

Nottingham couple jailed in Turkey over the alleged possession of fake money are 100% innocent, their family has said. Steven and Mandy Bonnington, from Hucknall, were remanded in custody after their arrest for possession and attempting to pass on bogus currency. The couple had been with their children less than two days into a family trip to Altinkum, a popular resort on the Aegean coast, when they were detained.

Two members of the couple’s family have flown to Turkey to look after their children, Natasha, 15, and Connor, 11. Meanwhile, other relatives waited at home for news – they have been unable to contact the pair since they were jailed.

The arrests have stunned relatives, friends and work colleagues, who claim the couple are normal people incapable of such a scam.

Angela Needham, 42, one of Mrs Bonnington’s four sisters, said: The family know they are 100% innocent. We just want to get the kids home. We want to get all of them home. It’s heart-rending.

The family said the couple were in Turkey buying items for their new apartment, in time for a holiday in August, when they were arrested.

Mr Bonnington has reportedly been remanded in custody at Soke Prison, about one hour’s drive from Altinkum. Mrs Bonnington was in Aydin Women’s Prison, about two hours from their apartment. It is reported that the couple had not been formally charged, but were being investigated by police for possession of about £1,000 in fake £20 notes.

They were held after trying to cash £100 at a bureau de change in Altinkum, the Mail Online website said. Beverley Guardian
