Gül: Turkey eyes investment in Serbia
Turkish President Abdullah Gül and Serbian President Boris Tadic said Monday in Belgrade that their two countries have developed a “strategic partnership.”
Serbia and Turkey say ties are better between the two countries now as they both face hurdles to joining the European Union. According to Tadic, Serbia and Turkey support each other’s stalled EU integrations.
“As long as Serbia and Turkey support settlement of the same problems, there will be peace in the Balkans,” Gül said, adding that the two countries have relations based on friendship as well as on security.
Turkey is interested in making several investments in Serbian infrastructure, Gül told reporters following his meeting with his Serbian counterpart. “Turkish entrepreneurs are [also] interested in infrastructure projects in Serbia,” Gül added.
A Serbian government source said Turkey was interested in taking part in the construction of two major highways there. During Gül’s visit, Serbian and Turkish ministers signed an accord on the reconstruction of a 66-kilometer stretch of road between Novi Pazar and Tutin, Beta news agency reported.
