Brits are facing travel disruption
Brits are facing travel disruption this evening after further snow fell in the north-east and parts of Scotland. Meanwhile, other areas of the country remain the subjects of snow warnings and the Met Office has issued a number of severe weather alerts.
Banchory in Scotland was covered in snow today (PA), A new warning has been released for south-west England and a similar notification remains in place in Wales.
Roads are thought to have taken the brunt of the snowfall to date, with ice in particular causing problems for motorists around the nation.
Earlier today, a number of schools were forced to close to pupils while the weekend’s sporting calendar has already seen a number of events postponed or struck off.
The snow is said to be the UK’s earliest widespread covering in some 17 years, with meteorological experts predicting the cold snap could last for as long as two weeks.
Frank Saunders, chief forecaster at the Met Office, says: ‘The cold and snow have become firmly established across the UK and although the focus of the snow has mainly been across eastern parts of the UK, as we head through the weekend many other parts may well see some snow showers too.’
The organisation adds icy roads are expected to become an increasingly significant obstacle for drivers as the weekend progresses.
